I can be catholic (or any religion) in the medieval age and stack divergences such as gaysecks, free divorce, clerical marriage, witchcraft OK, forbid pilgrimages, and probably 3 or 4 more extremely divergent modifiers, and STILL not be considered heretical. It is trivial to get the ecumenical council to approve of everything, and none of them bat an eye at any of this. Plus the popup windows (which I despise to this day) have some of the worst flavor text. "Oh human sacrifice is really popular with the kids these days, we should really consider adding that to our faith!" What? I don't mind a touch of ridiculousness in CK3, and I love when it happens sparingly. But this is just too absurd, I almost just want this DLC turned off. To be clear, it's not as *big* of a problem that an extremely divergent tenet could be introduced to your faith, but it needs to be extremely difficult (human sa…

To be clear, it's not as *big* of a problem that an extremely divergent tenet could be introduced to your faith, but it needs to be extremely difficult (human sacrifice for chalcedonian is NEUTRAL by the way, not even like a -100 or something) Absolutely not worth purchasing, just wait for the merchants update if they don't butcher that one too.

At its core it is really good, adding much needed depth to Western Europe. However, it is currently unbalanced. About 30 years after start, there becomes so much rites that it becomes ridiculous. Not to mention downright heretical rites being accepted with no pushback. There are already mods to fix this, like more accurate popes and bishops and make sure you change default rite creation speed to far fewer in settings to avoid faith border gore. Of course it isn’t good that it takes mods to fix and rebalance the game but that is the sad truth about ck3.

Listen, I think it's been a worrying and continuous problem how all Paradox games seem to be investing less and less time into playtesting. There are constantly bugs, performance issues, and mechanics that are noticeably bad ending up in the final product. And yes with this DLC specifically there are a fair amount of issues with historicity and realism. This is by no means a perfect expansion... That being said, it's pretty fun. I've genuinely been enjoying the base game more than I have in years. For a long time I would play the base game for achievements and do RP ideas in mods. Now I have a plethora of fun ideas to pursue in the basic game and I have more I'm stowing away for Silk and Silver. When they announced huge faith overhaul and trade to be developed at the same time and released in the same year I was VERY skeptical. The fact that even one of them came out in a decent state s…

I think that this DLC is far from perfect, but it would be a severe disservice to dissuade anyone on the fence from buying it.

Started as a viking, notice how little was added in all other religions, notice how my game was super unstable(royal court kept flashing black and alot of graphical issues), started playing armenia, a daylamit faction kept crashing my game. really to by honest i have no idea if the instability was from the new free update or the dlc. however really dissapointed tht there was absulutly no extra flavor as anyone but a christen faith also as the viking start i noticed a christen rite was adopting things like equle gender laws - which is cool... however considering the fact it only took tangled hair whole lifespane... which i think was around 70? idk dont remember... think tht should take multiple lifetimes... thinking of geting a refund... i would rate this dlc a Unfinished/10

What happened to Paradox games? I was very excited for this. In my excitement, I established a Duchy centered in Palermo and built a kingdom and then worked my way toward reforming the Catholic faith and create a new Catholic faith that is basically proto-Protestantism. I expected massive reactions and upheaval within the church. Nobody reacted to it. The Pope didn't say anything, nobody bothered me. No event took place. I was just fine violently conquering Catholic counties in Italy. What a bummer. If this was EU4, it would have had severe repercussions, much talk, multiple events, etc. This is CK3 and is supposed to be centered around the Church and the Crusades. Have the devs become completely disinterested in developing something engaging? Not sure. Would not recommend.

I am extremely torn on this because the free update that came with this DLC is the best Paradox has put out in years, the personal tenet system is simple on paper but opens up so much roleplay potential and is as big as adding cultural tenets was to the game in expanding depth with a single mechanic. But this is not about the free update, this is a review of the DLC, and bluntly even putting aside the bugs (which they can fix), the historical inaccuracies (which honestly don't bother me too much), and the performance (again, they can fix, but good God how is THIS the DLC and not All Under Heaven the one with performance issues?), the DLC just isn't fun and WAY too much seems poorly thought out. The Christian situation: to beat a dead horse, as so many others have pointed out, it is way to simple to turn Christianity almost as a whole into something unrecognizable. I believe the option …

The Christian situation: to beat a dead horse, as so many others have pointed out, it is way to simple to turn Christianity almost as a whole into something unrecognizable. I believe the option to do so should be present, but it should be the goal of a campaign, not something to be done in one singular activity. Theocratic rulers are essentially great value admin rulers. They have some interesting aspects about them, but they play too close to admin/bureaucratic while having almost nothing of what made those governments fun to play. Expansion is suppose to be more about politicking then it is in traditional CK3 games, but in practice I either need to get creative with holy wars (not really a con, but this is the ONE WAY), or play the election game, which can mean I get an entire kingdom area to work with OR....three counties (shout out to the Bishopric of Barri...). The puppet system, while interesting, is just overall poorly explained and I feel that it needs to do more. It should be harder to get puppets but have them be more meaningful. And for heaven's sake they allow you to FINALLY edit a religion rather then spin off a completely new one...if your the leader of the faith, but if the leader is your puppet, you know, the puppet that lets you make a new faith...why can't we just edit our current one with restrictions? To cut a long ramble short: Great free update, DLC is ok from a design standpoint but in practice is just not fun, certainly not $20 fun. I can milk my enjoyment out of it but if you do not care about playing in the Christian church then bluntly the non-DLC experience is more fun, and I think that is the most damning thing.

NOT RECOMMENDEDOct 8, 2026

I really want to like this but the DLC has some glaring issues. The biggest problem for me currently is once you become Pope, you seem to be locked into it since your player heir will be the cardinal set to become Pope when you die (at least if your character doesn't have a dynasty, which most clergy don't in 867). I would have preferred to have the choice to go back to playing a Bishop once my Pope PC died.

RECOMMENDEDOct 8, 2026

I noticed that people think it's too easy and simplistic to change their beliefs; presumably, the vanilla settings aren't helpful either, as this can happen too often. A global CD should also be introduced for the councils You should adjust the basic settings for this, because with my settings I don't have some of the extreme problems of some users to this extent. That beeing said i do enjoy the mechanics of spiritual fulfillment wich does make playing more than 1 character slightly different. Please fix the issues overall i enjoy the dlc tho.

In its current state, I can not recommend the DLC, until Paradox drops a few major patches, hold out on buying it, if you love plausibility and RP realism in your games. As far as Christianity and in particular Catholicism is considered, which is the main focus of the DLC, so far this DLC does more damage than good. I am sure that some youtubers are having loads of fun with a cannibal pope, but the fact is that tenets and rites are completely broken currently, and the whole of Christianity, ecumenical councils, papal bulls needs to be reworked. There are already some mods out there that somewhat mediate certain issues, but that’s besides the point that Paradox did a half hearted job as far as realism and plausibly are concerned. If you want people to play meme games, at least make it optional for the rest of us not to be forced to, put it behind a game rule! One this I have to say, who…

This DLC completely breaks Catholicism, divergence is far too easy with far too little response from AI. Causing a chaotic Catholicism which believes in obvious heresy without being heretical. This chaos can be fun for a save or two, but it quickly becomes a predictable bore that kills the Church and any immersion when it starts ruining every campaign. Theocratic governments are a nice idea, but quickly become boring due to a lack of depth. It would also be nice if after becoming Pope and dying you go back to playing as your diocese rather than playing the next Pope.
