Automation and building games in 2026: what to choose on PC

Factorio, Satisfactory, Dyson Sphere Program and Timberborn offer four approaches to production, logistics and engineering at different scales and perspectives.

Which problems interest you?

Factorio helps you inspect flows in a production layout; Satisfactory lets you walk through a large factory. Dyson Sphere Program transports supplies between planets, while Timberborn connects engineering with colony life and water. The type of problem matters more here than a promise to build the largest factory.

We started with ggpick results for factory automation, automation and colony simulation. Filters required Windows base games released or in Early Access, at least 80% positive Steam reviews and 1,000 reviews. Four approaches were chosen from those candidates: overhead conveyors, a first-person factory, interplanetary supply routes and a colony’s water infrastructure. Timberborn represents settlement engineering here, so do not expect a copy of Factorio. Mechanics were checked against official pages and reviews captured on 7 October 2026. The selection includes earlier releases.

Factories and understandable production chains

Factorio

For finding bottlenecks in production chains

Players
Solo or an online group
Mode
Single-player, online or LAN

Factorio is interesting because you can investigate why an existing line behaves differently from your plan, rather than simply placing another machine. Belts, inserters, power and supplies form a system you can improve gradually. Choose it if solving a specific production problem is satisfying. Start with a small working chain and leave room to expand: convenient access to a troublesome section is more useful than a beautiful plan that is difficult to change.

Keep in mind: The appeal is long-term planning. Agree on the group size and expansion setup before starting a shared world.

Satisfactory

For a factory you can walk through

Players
Solo or with friends
Mode
Single-player or online co-op

Satisfactory puts you inside the production system. You connect processes, find sites, inspect the surroundings and design convenient routes between structures. It suits players motivated by visible architectural scale and exploration. Friends can divide construction and scouting while keeping one shared plan. Before extending the whole factory, make sure its basic supplies and power can support the current workload.

Keep in mind: PC and consoles use separate multiplayer ecosystems; crossplay between them and local split-screen are not supported.

Planets and colonies: another engineering perspective

Dyson Sphere Program

For production across planets and stars

Players
1 player
Mode
Single-player

Dyson Sphere Program expands the usual supply problem: local lines become parts of a network between planets. Resource geography matters alongside individual machines, making the delivery system itself rewarding to understand. Choose it if a small factory leaves you wanting industry larger than one map. Establish reliable output in a simple area before expanding; another transport route cannot solve a shortage at the very beginning of a chain.

Keep in mind: It is in Early Access on 7 October 2026. The official version is single-player; cooperative modifications are outside the base mode.

Timberborn

For water engineering and colony management

Players
1 player
Mode
Single-player

Timberborn replaces belts and assembly lines with a beaver settlement, reserves and water management. Building placement, energy and drought preparation are connected, while dams and vertical construction make terrain part of the solution. It suits people interested in engineering who also want to care for a living colony. Before an ambitious project, check whether essential reserves can survive a difficult season: an impressive structure alone cannot feed residents.

Keep in mind: This is a colony simulation with shortage risks, rather than decoration alone. Steam lists the full version released on 12 March 2026.

Avoid an evening of endless rebuilding

Choose one small result: reliable production of an item, a clear supply route or dependable water reserves. Leave space near the first area and observe it before scaling up. When the system stops, identify the missing input instead of expanding every component equally.

Agree on roles and how to change shared structures before cooperative play. A large project is more enjoyable when participants understand names, routes and the next goal. Solo play offers complete control of pace without negotiating someone else’s design. Do not choose solely by the number of buildings in an attractive screenshot.

Quick checklist

  • Choose an overhead view or a position inside the world.
  • Decide on scale: a local factory, planets or a colony.
  • Check the official mode for playing with friends.
  • Start with one working task and clear power reserves.
  • Inspect Early Access limitations and system requirements.

Frequently asked questions

What should I try after Factorio?

Satisfactory if you want first-person production and exploration. Dyson Sphere Program for interplanetary supply routes. Timberborn for water and colony management instead of a conventional factory.

Can friends play all four together?

No. Factorio and Satisfactory support official shared play. The base versions of Dyson Sphere Program and Timberborn are single-player; an available modification is not equivalent to a supported mode.
