Agree on the game version and first mission

Deep Rock Galactic supports solo play or a squad of up to four. Check storefronts before buying for a group: Steam cannot cross-play with Xbox or Microsoft Store. Compatibility between Xbox and Microsoft Store does not make every PC copy compatible. Confirm that you are choosing Deep Rock Galactic itself rather than the separate Survivor game. Resolve this before the planned meeting, not after installing different products.

For the first outing, choose an accessible straightforward mission at a comfortable difficulty, read its objective and assemble before departure. Avoid a task chosen only because it rewards an experienced friend well. Your initial goal is understanding weapons, traversal tools and returning home. If joining strangers, tell them you are learning. Useful context helps teammates distinguish inexperience from an unwillingness to cooperate.

Choose useful tools as well as weapons

Scout lights larger spaces with a flare gun and moves with a grappling hook; Engineer contributes platforms and turrets. Combine their tools by creating a suitable position before reaching a resource. Gunner brings heavy weapons and a protective shield, while Driller opens passages through terrain. When choosing a class, ask how its abilities will help friends traverse a cave or survive trouble, rather than considering only what you shoot.

A smaller squad need not perform four roles simultaneously. Learn your own equipment and indicate where help is needed. Scout’s mobility does not let every class repeat the same leap. A useful route serves the group rather than one person. Offer a platform, light or tunnel before someone struggles with a risky path. That demonstrates a class’s contribution better than comparing kill totals afterwards.

Read the cave together and mark discoveries

Procedural caves and destructible terrain mean a familiar mission type does not establish a familiar route. Use light, the pointer and terrain map to indicate discoveries and check direction. Before leaving a large chamber, look for your teammates. Mention a steep drop or new passage separately. A friend around a corner cannot see your screen and should not need to guess your plan.

When enemies arrive, choose a position with visible approaches and room to avoid obstructing each other. Chasing one creature should not become a solo expedition through the cave. If a teammate becomes isolated, assess the rescue route and surrounding threats. Traversal and protection tools help reunite the squad as well as advance it. After a fight, agree on the next task rather than beginning several unannounced journeys.

Separate the objective from incidental mining

Read your mission’s requirements: the resource, special action and secondary objectives depend on its type. Not every mineral completes the main task. When your carrying capacity fills, use the mission’s deposit facility; missions with the M.U.L.E. provide a robot you can call. Check objective progress after depositing before finding another deposit. The whole squad then understands what remains.

Discuss optional objectives in light of the team’s condition. Low ammunition or a friend running short of time are reasons to reconsider collecting everything nearby. Agree before actions that begin a new phase or significant fight. Readiness means teammates are nearby, understand the task and have equipment prepared. A button being available does not establish that everyone is ready for it.

Treat resupply as a shared resource

Nitra is used to order resupply pods. Deposit it into shared resources and check the displayed cost before relying on another delivery. If supplies are low, discuss gathering more from an accessible area first. Report ammunition shortages before weapons run completely dry: the squad can prepare more easily than rescue an unprepared group during an already difficult fight.

Choose a delivery location the group can actually reach. Take your share and ask before taking extra: another miner also needs ammunition and tools. Compare needs aloud rather than judging only primary-weapon shots. Before defending an area, consider access to supplies and a safe approach. A shared pod should support the mission instead of becoming a competition among friends.

Prepare extraction before triggering it

Warn the squad before calling extraction and confirm that agreed tasks are complete. Afterwards, watch the pod’s direction and remaining time rather than returning to optional mining out of habit. In missions with a M.U.L.E., its route helps orientation, but inspect obstacles yourself. Keep in touch with slower teammates: one class’s fast traversal tool does not automatically provide a route for everybody.

If someone falls behind, assess the time and situation, then agree who will help and which tool will serve. Avoid everybody turning back silently and losing both the rescue and exit route. Afterwards, choose one difficulty to address next time, such as earlier platforms, better lighting or reporting supply shortages. A small shared lesson is more useful than a lengthy comparison of final statistics.

Quick checklist

  • Storefront versions are compatible; the squad understands objectives and difficulty.
  • Everyone knows a useful tool belonging to their class.
  • Nitra and resupply are treated as shared resources.
  • Phase changes and extraction are announced beforehand.

Frequently asked questions

Do we need exactly four different classes?

No. The game supports up to four players, but a full squad is optional. For initial missions, learning your selected tools and using them to help the team matters more.

Can Steam players join a friend on Xbox?

The official compatibility page says Steam cannot cross-play with Xbox or Microsoft Store. Do not extend support for the Xbox/Microsoft Store pairing to every PC storefront.

When should I take a second resupply share?

Ask the squad and compare needs first. Supplies are shared and limited. Taking extra can make sense by agreement, rather than automatically because you arrived first.
